Therapeutic Electrical Stimulation
Therapeutic electrical stimulation or Therapeutic ES utilises electrical stimulation of very specific muscles to aid in rehabilitation in conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS) and acquired brain injury (ABI).
Therapeutic ES is used by the neuro physiotherapist to increase the activation of a specific muscle, to reduce atrophy (weakness) of a muscle, to use the physiological action of a weak muscle to stretch the stronger, tighter opposing muscle, to provide sensory feedback regarding the muscle action and to aid in rehabilitation of a more complex movement patterns.
The stimulation can be given on a rhythmical repetitive basis – usually to strengthen the muscle or can be delivered during a specific point in the movement pattern by the user or the physiotherapist. It can also be triggered by the user themselves using an EMG signal (EMG triggered stimulation).
