What is FES?
Functional Electrical Stimulators are innovative technologies used in neurological rehabilitation by specially trained physiotherapists. FES is used to help clients with neurological disorders of the upper or lower limb to improve mobility and physical independence. These electronic units use electrical stimulation to;
improve hand or arm function.
improve drop foot and other gait abnormalities.
FES can be helpful in;
NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) issued guidance in Jan 2009 that FES can be offered routinely as a treatment option for people with foot drop caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord.
